One Life - Part 8

Trina was in sec. 3 when both her siblings were locked up. Though she wasn't really close to them, she was sorry that they had to be separated from her mother. In fact, she did wonder if she had anything to do with what had happened to them. Did her 'unluckiness' rub into them and cause them to do what they did? At least her mother thought so and would sometimes cane her so hard that Trina had to hide under the table. Trina had always been conscious of the cane marks on her hands and legs and would usually wear a jacket to school to try to cover them up. She would also find all sort of excuses to avoid changing into her PE attire. However, the more she tried to hide the 'markings', the more obvious they became as the class would scrutinise her even more closely. When asked about it, she would say that she had been lazy and was given a lashing.

Trina had always been an average student. She had wanted to attend tuition class but her mother said that it wasn't necessary. In fact, she would rather Trina quit school and help her to take care of the toddler she was babysitting to supplement the family income. She felt that it was a waste of time and money for gals to study as they would eventually get marry and end up a housewife just like her, which was why she didn't stop Lena when she decided to quit school. Thus, Trina had to try her best to maintain her grades so that her mother had no reason to ask her to quit school. However, that was easier said than done. Other than having to do most of the housework, she had to revise her work amid the cries and disturbance of the toddler with the little time she had left. The thought of giving it up ever crossed her mind but her desire to at least complete her secondary education kept her going. Unlike her mother and sister, she understood the importance of a good education and would like to continue to study for as long as circumstances allowed.

After spending six months at the rehab, Lena finally got rid of her addiction and was released. She missed her freedom more than her family and was soon spending most of her time outdoor again. Having been handsomely rewarded for her first offspring, Lena decided that she would start production again so as to get more rewards. Thus, she went round sleeping with whoever was available, hoping to get her 'product' out as soon as possible. She was not disappointed as she soon found herself carrying her second child. She got her mother to make the announcement to her childless friends and relatives and to urge them to make advance booking. However, once bitten twice shy, this time round there were no takers. The 'quality' of her firstborn had spread far and wide and nobody wanted to risk having to raise an abnormal child. Though her mother assured them of the quality as Lena had been 'cleansed', they were still sceptical. By the time it was clear that nobody was interested in adopting her unborn child, it was too late for Lena to abort the baby. Eventually, she gave birth to a gal. Though small in size and light in weight, she was a normal healthy infant. The child had to be registered as fatherless as Lena didn't have a clue as to who the father was and had to take on Lena's surname.

The new addition only meant more work for Trina. She was given the task of attending to the baby whenever she cried, even in the middle of the night. It was indeed taxing for Trina who had to juggle between tidying up the house and taking care of the infant, on top of her mounting schoolwork and assignments. Lena who was on 'confinement', didn't really confine herself as she would sneak out of the house whenever her mother wasn't around. Even when she was at home she wouldn't lift a hand to help poor Trina. She would shout for her whenever the baby awakes, while she continued either with her TV watching or with the chat she was having on the phone. Indeed, it seemed that Trina was the mother rather than Lena who had hardly embraced the child since she was born.
